Hydrogen storage infrastructure
Partnering with a Nordic team building the storage layer for Europe's hydrogen economy — bridging the gap between green production and industrial end-use.
The challenge
Green hydrogen production is scaling, but storage and distribution infrastructure remains the critical bottleneck. Existing solutions are capital-intensive, geographically constrained, and poorly suited for the distributed energy systems emerging across Northern Europe. Without scalable storage, hydrogen cannot fulfil its role in decarbonising heavy industry and long-haul transport.
Our approach
The team has developed a modular, underground storage approach using lined rock caverns that can be deployed near demand centres at substantially lower capital intensity than many salt-cavern alternatives. Combined with a software layer for inventory management and dispatch optimisation, the system integrates directly with existing grid infrastructure and industrial offtakers.
The outcome
A first pilot completed with a regional energy utility, demonstrating meaningful storage capacity and improved economics versus conventional options. Additional sites are under development, with contracted capacity extending over a multi-year horizon — a path typical of infrastructure rollouts we look for.
